چکیده
Over the last decade and a half John Roemer has published a series of papers examining various fundamental problems in Marxist theory from the point of view of modern economic general equilibrium theory. In the present volume he summarizes his work on the concept of exploitation in the form of an "Introduction to Marxist Economic Philosophy". This book is intended to make Roemer's ideas accessible to readers who have little or no background in economic theory. Roemer has taken the trouble to formulate the very simplest and most transparent models in which the core of his claims and results can be expressed. The exposition of the economic models is a model of didactic clarity, and exhibits an attractive feature of Roemer's work, his accurate and persuasive reasoning from explicit premises. Roemer's clarity and rhetorical persuasiveness render all the more necessary a critical examination of his premises and problematic. Unfortunately these basic conceptions do not stand up well to scrutiny. It is difficult to reconstruct a coherent problematic motivating his research, and key definitions and assumptions on which his results rest are flawed and inadequate to the analytical task he proposes for himself. I will consider Roemer's work first from the point of view of Marx's influential theory of exploitation.

The criteria called conditional equality and egalitarian equivalence proposed by Fleurbaey and Maniquet[15, 16] serve to assess the degree of equity among individuals. They have not been applied as often as the criteria of equality of opportunity[28, 30], mainly because the first criteria should be used in an ordinal framework which differs from the cardinal approach usually adopted in the lite...
متن کاملBringing responsibility for small area variations in hospitalization rates back to the hospital: the propensity to hospitalize index and a test of the Roemer's Law.
OBJECTIVE To assign responsibility for variations in small area hospitalization rates to specific hospitals and to evaluate the Roemer's Law in a way that does not artificially induce correlation between bed supply and utilization. DATA SOURCES/STUDY SETTING We used data on hospitalizations and outpatient treatment for 15 medical conditions of nonmanaged care Part B eligible Medicare enrollee...
متن کاملDo More Hospital Beds Lead to Higher Hospitalization Rates? A Spatial Examination of Roemer’s Law
BACKGROUND Roemer's Law, a widely cited principle in health care policy, states that hospital beds that are built tend to be used. This simple but powerful expression has been invoked to justify Certificate of Need regulation of hospital beds in an effort to contain health care costs. Despite its influence, a surprisingly small body of empirical evidence supports its content. Furthermore, known...
متن کاملA Paralytic Disease of Guinea Pigs Due to the Tubercle Bacillus
The experimental data collected during this study of a transmissible type of paralysis developing in tuberculous guinea pigs indicate the condition to be a true tuberculous meningitis. We have been able to rule out the possibility that it is due to a non-tuberculous infection of the central nervous system caused by Roemer's virus, or by an atypical herpes virus, or by some bacterium other than ...
متن کاملOne-step purification and characterization of cellulase-free xylanase produced by alkalophilic Bacillus subtilis ash
The present study describes the one-step purification and characterization of an extracellular cellulase-free xylanase from a newly isolated alkalophilic and moderately thermophilic strain of Bacillus subtilis ASH. Xylanase was purified to homogeneity by 10.5-fold with ~43% recovery using ion-exchange chromatography through CM-Sephadex C-50. The purified enzyme revealed a single band on SDS-PAG...
